Nearly 80 girls hospitalized in Afghanistan for poisoning

About eight dozen girls have been hospitalized in Afghanistan for poisoning, after two attacks this weekend in schools in the north of the country.

The head of the Sangcharak region’s education department, Mohammad Rahmani, said the attacks took place in two nearby schools, quoted by the Associated Press agency.

“The students were transported to the hospital and they are fine,” he said, without giving details about the type of poisoning and the nature of the possible injuries caused.

The two cases are being investigated and it is suspected that the attacks were carried out at the behest of someone out of resentment or settling scores.

This may be the first attack of this nature, by poisoning, in Afghanistan since the Taliban came to power in the country in August 2021, with a series of changes limiting the freedom and rights of Afghan women and girls.

In Iran, the non-governmental organization Amnesty International has already warned that the education of millions of Iranian women is at risk due to poisoning in women’s educational centers.

Last April, Amnesty International revealed that since November 2022, more than 100 women’s educational centers have been attacked, some of them multiple times, and that around 13,000 students have received medical attention for poisoning.

In March, Iranian authorities announced the arrest of 118 people on suspicion of involvement in the poisonings, but despite this, attacks continue across the country.
