Brussels proposes eighth package of sanctions before new escalation of the Kremlin

The European Commission proposed this Wednesday an eighth package of sanctions against Russia, in the face of the “new escalation” of the Kremlin in its aggression against Ukraine, with the celebration of “fraudulent referendums”, partial mobilizations and the threat of resorting to nuclear weapons.

The new package of EU sanctions, outlined in Brussels by the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, includes a ceiling on the price of Russian oil , new trade restrictions to deprive Russia of some 7,000 million euros. of income, the ban on exporting more products to deprive the Kremlin of key technologies for the Russian war machine and the updating of the list of people and entities subject to restrictive measures.

Brussels also proposes in this new round of sanctions the prohibition of the provision of European services to Russia and the prohibition that EU citizens form part of the governing bodies of Russian state companies, arguing that “Russia should not benefit from the knowledge and experience” of Europeans. .

“In the last week, Russia has escalated the invasion of Ukraine to a new level, and we are determined to make the Kremlin pay the price for this further escalation. Today, we are proposing a new package of very tough sanctions against Russia.” von der Leyen announced.
