Angolan president wants Portuguese to invest more and compete for privatizations

The President of Angola on Monday invited Portuguese businessmen to make the most of the common language to increase direct investment in the country and participate in the future privatization of Angolan State assets.

This call was transmitted by João Lourenço at the beginning of the plenary meeting between the Portuguese and Angolan governments, at the Presidential Palace, in Luanda, in a brief intervention that he dedicated to the analysis of the Portuguese-Angolan bilateral cooperation.

Before the Prime Minister, António Costa, spoke, João Lourenço began by pointing out that “cooperation with Portugal has a scope that covers practically all sectors of Angolan national life, with a dynamic that he considered positive and that is currently no greater due to the restrictions that were caused by Covid-19.

“Portuguese private investors have the advantage over others of the common language, a cross between families and a vast knowledge of our culture, our habits and customs. This is capital that cannot be measured and should not be wasted,” warned the angolan Head of state.

He then specified that the Angolan government “would like to see more direct investment from Portuguese businessmen in agribusiness, hotels, tourism, civil construction or commerce, the textile or footwear industry.”

“Privatization processes of State assets that Portuguese businessmen can take advantage of are underway,” he added, before also addressing one of the most sensitive issues in Portuguese-Angolan bilateral relations, which has to do with the question of the debt of the Angolan State with national companies.

“We want to resolve the debt issue as soon as possible to reassure the men and women who bet on the Angolan market,” he said.

Regarding the meeting with the Prime Minister, the Angolan Head of State pointed out that there was “an opportunity to take stock of the bilateral relationship and project future actions to be implemented, in order to make relations of friendship, economic cooperation and scientific.” and cultural exchange.

“The relations between our countries have great potential to be explored. I cannot fail to mention that the citizens of our two countries are always very attentive to events that occur on both sides, and especially at a time like this when they take place. talks at the highest level and expect concrete results,” he said.

In this context, João Lourenço defended “the strengthening of cultural, academic, technical and scientific exchange”.

“The Strategic Cooperation Program (PEC) 2023/2027 contains a wide range of important actions to be implemented. I believe that we will be able to show enough commitment and dedication to the achievement of these objectives, which will produce concrete results. essential to increase the resources to support the projects in the equation, namely that Portugal is associated with the construction of important Angolan infrastructures”, he added.
