War in Ukraine: Kakhovka Dam Damaged, Major Floods Threaten Kherson Region

The dam at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station in southern Ukraine was damaged overnight from Monday to Tuesday. Ukraine accuses Russian forces of being responsible for this destruction. Major floods threaten the Kherson region.

The Kakhovka dam in eastern Ukraine suffered damage overnight from Monday to Tuesday, the Russian news agency TASS reported on Telegram. Located on the Dnipro River upstream of Kherson, this dam retained a large amount of water, which could be released in the next few hours and cause extensive flooding.

This strategic point in eastern Ukraine was already a cause for concern in October 2022. If the dam bursts, “more than 80 towns, including Kherson, will be in the flash flood zone,” warned Volodymyr Zelensky.

Ukraine, through its southern operational command, accuses the Russian forces of being responsible for the destruction of this dam and the associated hydroelectric power station. The Ukrainian president called an emergency meeting of the National Security Council to decide the reaction to oppose this destruction.
