“There is a threat of catastrophic flooding of the areas of Novo Kakhovka urban district, Golopristansky municipal district and Alyoshkensky municipal district,” said the official TASS bureau of Russia.
Russian authorities on Tuesday warned residents of areas affected by the partial destruction of the Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine about the risk of catastrophic flooding.
In a message from the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia, the population is advised to do so collect the necessary personal items, documents, food for three days and drinking water.
The ministry has also asked the population to do so shut off the gas and waterand must go to the meeting points communicated by the local authorities.
Russian-installed authorities in the Kherson region said the local government and the Ministry of Emergency Situations were preparing a “planned evacuation” of the population.
They also assured that they control the situation in the regions on the left bank of the Dnieper River.
The two entities “call on residents to remain calm, not to panic and not to trust information coming from unverified sources,” local Russian authorities said on the Telegram social network.
“All residents will receive the necessary help in full: Russia will not abandon its own country,” they added.
Kherson, where the Kakhovka dam is located, is one of four Ukrainian regions that Moscow integrated into the territory of the Russian Federation on September 20, 2022, seven months after it invaded the neighboring country.
In addition to Kherson, Moscow annexed Donetsk, Lugansk and Zaporijia regions, after doing the same with Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula in 2014.
Russia and Ukraine accused each other of destroying the dam.
