Astrud Gilberto, one of the greatest references of bossa nova, dies

The Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto, one of the greatest references of bossa nova, has died this Tuesday at the age of 83. The information was given by the family on social media.

“Life is beautiful, as the song says, but I come to bring the sad news that my grandmother became a star today and is next to my grandfather João Gilberto,” wrote Sofía Gilberto, the singer’s granddaughter.

Astrud Gilberto became known worldwide with her version of the song “Chica de Ipanema”. The singer was born in Salvador, in 1940, and married the musician João Gilberto, another of the great references of Brazilian music.

Throughout her career, Astrud Gilberto has released 19 albums, the biggest success being the transformation of the song composed by Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, with a version in English, in partnership with American saxophonist Stan Getz. With the song, the singer became the first Brazilian woman to be nominated for a Grammy, and “The Girl from Ipanema” won the Record of the Year category in 1965.

Astrud Gilberto retired from the stage in 2002.
