Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi condemned the “rioters” on Wednesday and described it as “unacceptable chaos” in the context of the demonstrations unleashed after the death of a young woman detained by the moral police.
“Those who participated in the riots must be treated firmly as the people want,” he said in an interview on state television.
“The enemy has aimed at national unity and wants to pit people against each other,” he added, accusing the United States, the Islamic Republic’s sworn enemy, of fueling the dispute. He acknowledged that Mahsa Amini’s death had caused “pain and sorrow” among Iranians and promised that the authorities would “soon” present a final report on his death.
At least 1200 arrests
Demonstrations have been taking place every night since September 16, the date of death in hospital of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. She had been arrested three days earlier by the morality police for violating the strict dress code for women in the Islamic Republic of Iran, which is that they must cover their hair in public.
“The security of people is the red line of the Islamic Republic of Iran and no one can break the law and sow chaos,” which is “unacceptable,” the president hammered.
According to a latest report released Tuesday by the Fars agency, “about 60 people have died” since the start of the protests. Authorities reported 10 deaths of law enforcement officers, but it was not clear if they were among the 60 killed.
Authorities also reported the arrest of more than 1,200 protesters since September 16.
