Kiev accuses Russians of causing ecological disaster in Kakhovka

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal on Wednesday accused Russia of causing “one of the worst environmental disasters in decades” with the destruction of the Kakhovka dam on the Dnieper River in southern Ukraine.

“The greatest damage and greatest threat to the future in the aftermath of this act of terror is the ecological devastation inflicted on southern Ukraine.” said Shmyhal after a meeting of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris.

Populations are still being evacuated from southern Ukraine after the partial destruction of the dam in an area occupied by Russian troops.

Moscow and Kiev deny responsibility and blame each other for the situation at the dam that has caused massive flooding along the Dnieper River, where a humanitarian and environmental catastrophe is feared.

So far, more than 2,700 people have been evacuated from the flooded areas, Kiev authorities and Russian occupation forces said today.

“Dozens of cities and towns will have problems with drinking water and access to water for irrigation, which will cease, causing drought and poor harvests,” the Ukrainian prime minister added.

“This threatens global food security,” he said, describing the act of destruction, which the government of Ukraine has blamed on Russia, as an “act of terror” and a “crime against humanity “.

The destruction of the Kakhovka dam also meant that “at least 150 tons of oil spilled into the river, with the risk of another 300 tons infiltrating” the soil on the banks of the Dnieper, which “posed a threat to the flora and to the fauna” of the region, he added.
