Surgery Pope Francis underwent today to repair an abdominal hernia was completed after three hours without complications, the Vatican announced.
“The intervention is over: it went smoothly and lasted three hours,” the Vatican press service said in a brief statement.
Sources close to the Vatican had already mentioned, shortly before, that Jorge Bergoglio, 86, had been transferred to his apartment on the 10th floor of the Gemelli Hospital in Rome.
According to the same sources, quoted by the Italian news agency ANSA, the pope’s surgical intervention, under general anesthesia, was a laparotomy with plastic surgery of the abdominal wall performed laparoscopically to repair a hernia that formed on an old abdominal scar. and which threatened to cause intestinal obstruction.
In the Roman hospital, Bergoglio was operated on by the team of clinician and academic Sergio Alfieri, who had already operated on him two years ago.
The Pope will have to remain hospitalized for a few days, for which the Prefecture of the Papal Household previously announced the cancellation of his “special and general audiences until June 18, for health reasons.”
