Zelensky accuses Russia of continuing to bomb during flood rescue efforts

The Ukrainian president denounced in a statement to the nation that Russia continues to bomb the part of Kherson province controlled by the Kiev government as rescue teams try to save victims of a dam overflowing.

“The evacuation continues. Under fire! Heavy flooding.

Zelensky also stated that the situation in the occupied part of Kherson province is “absolutely catastrophic”. According to the president, “the residents have simply abandoned the people in these terrible conditions”.

According to the Ukrainian president, the Russian-imposed authorities in the region have left the population “without water” and “on the roofs of flooded cities” to fend for themselves.

“And this is another deliberate crime by Russia: after the terrorist state has caused the disaster, it also maximizes the damage caused,” he said.

The province of Kherson is divided in two by the Dnieper River, on which the destroyed dam and hydroelectric power station stood. The western bank is controlled by the Kiev government and the eastern one is occupied by Russia.

According to Kiev, Russia deliberately blew up the dam and power plant in the occupied zone to flood the area and prevent a possible Ukrainian advance.
