Climate. Human-induced warming is reaching an unprecedented rate

Warming caused by human activities has caused temperatures to rise by more than 0.2°C between 2013 and 2022, with unprecedented greenhouse gas emissions, according to an international study published today.

“In the period 2013-2022, human-induced warming increased to an unprecedented level of more than 0.2°C per decade,” reads an article in the scientific journal Earth System Science Data.

The article was signed by about 50 researchers and is based on the working method of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), linked to the UN.

The aim of the study is to provide updated indicators from the 2021 IPCC report and provide open data that will be updated every year, to feed COP negotiations and political debate, as the current decade is considered decisive to to save the Paris 2015 goal.

“It’s a harsh reality that demonstrates the urgency of reducing global CO2 and methane emissions to help limit global warming and the resulting increase in risk,” French paleoclimatologist Valérie Masson-Delmotte, who said. participated in the investigation, to reporters.

Representatives from all countries are in Bonn to prepare for COP28, the major UN climate conference scheduled for the end of this year in Dubai.

Among other things, the discussion about the use of fossil fuels should mark the conference.

The data released today comes amid a decisive year for climate policy, with the publication of the first “global assessment” of states’ commitments in implementing the Paris agreement, which aims to limit global warming to below 2°C. C , planned for September and, if possible, 1.5°C compared to the pre-industrial period.

However, the warming caused by human activities, mainly with the use of fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas), is already 1.14°C in the period 2013-2022 and 1.26°C in 2022, according to the study calculations.

Scientists warn that humanity is entering a “critical” decade and that the 1.5°C limit could be reached or exceeded in the next 10 years.
