Smoke from Canada’s wildfires reaches Norway

Norwegian authorities said smoke from the Canadian wildfires, which have shrouded parts of the United States and Canada in a thick haze, was expected to reach Norway on Thursday.

Atmosphere and climate scientists at the Norwegian Institute for Climate and Environmental Research used a prediction model to calculate how smoke would move through the atmosphere.

Smoke has been drifting over Greenland and Iceland since June 1, and observations in southern Norway have seen increasing concentrations of aerosolized particles, according to the independent research institute.

“We may see some haze or smell smoke,” said Nikolaos Evangeliou, NILU principal investigator. “However, we do not believe that the amount of airborne particles here in Norway is large enough to be harmful to our health.”

The east coast of the US has been experiencing dangerous levels of pollution from the wildfires burning in Canada. Huge tongues of unhealthy air stretched out into the Midwest. Smoking affected millions of people, delayed flights at major airports, postponed Major League Baseball games and prompted people to buy pandemic-era masks.

Canada has asked for help to fight more than 400 wildfires across the country.
