Two of the four children injured in the knife attack at a park in Annecy, in the French Alps, are still in “critical condition,” the French government said on Friday morning.
“There are still two children who are in critical condition,” said executive branch spokesman Olivier Veran in an interview with average French, a day after the attack that injured four children and two adults.
French President Emmanuel Macron, accompanied by his wife, will visit the victims of the attack on Friday, which he called an act of “absolute cowardice”.
“After yesterday’s attack, the President of the Republic and his wife will today visit the victims and their families, as well as everyone in Annecy who contributed to help and support them,” a note to the press said.
In the attack that shook the country on Thursday, a gunman stabbed four toddlers and two adults at a children’s playground and public park on a lake in Annecy. The children who were victims of stabbings are between 22 and 36 months old.
The reason for the attack is not yet known, but the Annecy prosecutor ruled out a terrorist motive.
The alleged perpetrator of the attack is a 32-year-old Syrian asylum seeker, identified as Abdalmasih H. Authorities said the detainee was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said the suspect has no criminal record and “no history of psychiatric problems”.
Recently divorced from a Swedish citizen, the suspect obtained refugee status in Sweden 10 years ago. He recently applied for asylum in France, but was rejected.
