CO2 emissions are falling in the EU, with Portugal recording the second highest increase in 2022

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels for energy use in the European Union (EU) decreased by 2.8% in 2022 compared to 2021, with Portugal recording the second highest increase (9.9%) , according to Eurostat.

According to the EU’s statistical service, CO2 emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels (oil and petroleum products, natural gas, coal and peat) for energy use in the 27 will amount to almost 2.4 gigatons in 2022.

Last year, CO2 emissions fell in 17 Member States and increased in the other nine, with the largest year-on-year decreases in the Netherlands (-12.8%), Luxembourg (-12%), Belgium (-9.7%) . %) and Hungary (-8.6%).

On the other hand, Bulgaria had the largest increase in emissions (12%), followed by Portugal (9.9%) and Malta (4.1%).

CO2 emissions from energy consumption are a major contributor to global warming and are responsible for around 75% of all man-made greenhouse gas emissions in the EU.

Fuel mix, housing standards, economic growth, population size, and industrial and transportation activities are some of the factors that affect CO2 emissions from energy use.
