Smoke from the fires affecting various parts of Canada and the US reached Norway this week and “it is likely that the smoke cloud will reach other countries,” the Norwegian Institute for Climate and Climate Research said on Friday. Climate (NILU).
This Friday, several people alerted to the smell of smoke and the cloudy landscape on the west coast of Norway, NILU sources told the Europa Press news agency. The organization considered that it is still difficult to confirm the phenomenon, but assured that the concentrations of smoke in southern Norway have increased.
However, the smoke levels are low and its density is low, so the possibility of an adverse effect on the health of the population is excluded, the Institute indicated.
“When the smoke reaches Europe, the number of particles is much less,” said Nikolaos Evangeliou, a NILU researcher. “That means we can possibly see the smoke as a fine mist and maybe smell it, but the number of particulates is so low that it shouldn’t pose any health hazard,” Evangeliou added.
Canada was battling more than 400 active fires on Tuesday, with most in the province of Quebec and nearly half out of control. In the province of Quebec alone there are 150 forest fires.
The country registered 2,293 forest fires this year and around 3.8 million hectares burned, above the average of the last decades.
