Boris Johnson resigns as deputy

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigned this Friday as a deputy, with immediate effect, after receiving the report on the Partygate case, relating to parties in Downing Street, during the pandemic.

“I didn’t lie and I think deep down the commission knows that,” Boris Johnson was quoted as saying by BBC News.

In a statement, the former British prime minister stressed that the inquiry commission “made it clear” in a letter that it was preparing to expel him from his position as Conservative deputy in the House of Commons (lower house of parliament). .

Johnson, who was forced to resign in the summer after a series of scandals, notably over Downing Street parties that breached anti-Covid-19 rules, remained an MP.

“It is very sad to leave Parliament, at least for now, but above all I am shocked and horrified to have been expelled, in an undemocratic manner, by a committee chaired and led by the [trabalhista] Harriet Harman, with such blatant bias,” he said.

The committee was expected to publish its report in the coming weeks, and Johnson could face suspension from the House of Commons if he is found to have lied deliberately.

In the lengthy resignation statement, Johnson accused the committee of inquiry of trying to find him guilty “from the start” and “regardless of the facts.”

The resignation will trigger a special election to replace Johnson as MP for a seat in suburban London.

Boris Johnson, whose career has been a roller coaster of scandal and upheaval, led the Conservatives to a landslide victory in 2019 but was forced out by his own party less than three years later.
