Liz Truss defends ‘urgent measures’ to stimulate the British economy

British Prime Minister Liz Truss said on Thursday that the government had to “take urgent action to grow the economy” in reference to market instability caused by the announcement of her government’s fiscal plan.

In the first public statement on the consequences of the growth program that the Minister of Finance, Kwasi Kwarteng, released last Friday, Truss defended that this is the “correct plan”.

The growth program, which includes aggressive and massive tax cuts, sank sterling, drew criticism from the International Monetary Fund and prompted the Bank of England to intervene in an emergency, announcing bond purchases.

The Conservative leader reiterated in statements to several BBC networks that she is “prepared” to make “controversial and difficult decisions” to move the economy forward and that she will do “whatever it takes” to achieve it.

Truss insisted “urgent action” was needed to protect the country from rising energy prices and to boost growth.

“We had to take urgent action to grow our economy, to move the UK forward and also to tackle inflation,” he explained.

“Of course this means making controversial decisions, but I am prepared to do that as prime minister because what is important to me is to get our economy moving, to make sure people survive this winter, and we are prepared to do that. it takes for that to happen,” he said.
