Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov currently sees no “base” for opening negotiations with Ukraine to end the war.
“It is no longer about preconditions, but that there is no basis, not even a weak basis, at the moment to build at least some form of dialogue,” he said at a press conference on Sunday. news agency TASS.
As one of the reasons cited, Peskov believes that there is currently a lack of will and availability on the part of the “regime”, in relation to Ukraine, to sit at the dialogue table.
In particular, Peskov referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s continued messages in favor of Ukraine’s membership of NATO.
Since one of Russia’s conditions for negotiating an end to the conflict is a public declaration of neutrality by Zelensky, comments such as the president “demonstrate Kyiv’s unwillingness and inability to resolve existing issues at the negotiating table.”
Zelensky’s peace formula also openly calls for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Crimea and eastern Ukraine, demands that Moscow considers unacceptable for a dialogue process.
