“It’s a great joy to see them like this.” Having miraculously survived their plane crash after 40 days of wandering through the Colombian jungle, the four miracle children enjoy a well-deserved rest at a military hospital in Bogotá.
“They are happy to see the family […] they have all the senses,” rejoiced his grandfather Fidencio Valencia, a 47-year-old Huitoto Indian. “My grandchildren have life [en eux]. Although they are very exhausted, I know they are in good hands.”
“They are recovering”
The effects of their trip are still being felt: the 4 children found by rescuers on Friday afternoon “were dehydrated” and still cannot eat normally, Colombian Defense Minister Iván Velásquez explained during a visit at his bedside. with President Gustavo Petro. “But they are recovering, they are talking a little,” said the manager. The children will need to stay in the hospital for at least two weeks to make a full recovery.
How were such young children able to survive for so long in such a hostile environment? “When the plane crashed, they took out flour” that had resisted the blow, explained his grandfather, “then they ate seeds.”
The timing of the accident may have played in their favor: “it’s harvest time in the jungle,” says Astrid Cáceres, president of the Colombian Family Welfare Institute, who explains that they were able to eat fruit.
