New Ukrainian balance sheet reports six dead and 35 missing in floods

Ukrainian authorities this Sunday released an upwardly revised balance of human losses from flooding following the destruction of a dam, with six dead and 35 missing in areas it controls.

In Russian-occupied areas, Moscow-installed officials reported eight dead and 13 missing as a result of the dam’s destruction during the week.

On Tuesday, the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam in the south of the Dnieper sent waterspouts raining down on neighboring towns and villages.

The two camps deny responsibility for this catastrophe, which struck both banks of the Dnieper, each controlled by one of the belligerents.

According to Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klymenko, 77 sites were flooded, including 14 in Russian-occupied territories.

In a Telegram post, the same official presented a total balance of six dead and 35 missing, including seven children, in both regions.

In areas under Ukrainian control, 3,700 people were evacuated.

In parts occupied by Russia, local authorities claimed to have evacuated more than 7,000 people.

According to Klymenko, 162,000 people are without drinking water due to the destruction of the hydroelectric dam.
