The funeral of Silvio Berlusconi, former Italian Prime Minister who died on Monday at the age of 86, will take place on Wednesday in the Milan Cathedral, according to the diocese of the Italian city.
The time of the funeral has not yet been announced, the diocese of Milan told the media.
It is expected to be a state funeral, as Silvio Berlusconi was Italy’s three-time prime minister, among other active politicians.
This Monday, Berlusconi’s body will be in a burning chamber in his mansion, in Villa Martino in Arcore, a town near Monza, north of Milan.
On Tuesday, the combustion chamber will be at the headquarters of its television channel, Mediaset, according to the same sources.
The mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, offered the facilities of the municipality, very close to the cathedral, for the funeral.
Following his death, on Monday morning at the San Raffaele hospital in Milan, some supporters gathered in front of the medical center, with messages and flags of Italy and Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party.
Other followers have already begun to leave flowers at the doors of his mansion.
In Rome, the city where he developed his political career, the Italian flag flies at half mast in the Senate, where he has held a seat since the last elections in October 2022.
Silvio Berlusconi, who died this Monday at the age of 86, was a controversial figure, media mogul, conservative and right-wing and Prime Minister of Italy for nine years (1994-1995, 2001-2006, 2008-2011).
He was the target of corruption allegations and was at the center of sex scandals that would culminate in his ouster from the Italian Senate in 2013.
In 2022, the billionaire returned to the political spotlight as a senator and leader of the party he founded, Forza Italia, a member of the currently ruling right-wing and far-right coalition led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
