The president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, remembered former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who died Monday in a Milan hospital, as a “protagonist of politics in Italy and Europe”, considering that he “left his mark”.
“Silvio Berlusconi: the fighter who led the center right and was the protagonist of politics in Italy and Europe for generations,” wrote Roberta Metsola, in a post on the social network Twitter.
Remembering the former Italian prime minister as a “father, businessman, MEP, prime minister and senator”, the leader of the European assembly also stressed that Silvio Berlusconi “left his mark and will not be forgotten”.
Also through Twitter, the European Commissioner for the Economy, the Italian Paolo Gentiloni, assured that “a leader who left a deep mark on Italy in recent decades has died.”
“For everyone, today is a moment of condolence, of closeness with his family and with the Forza Italia community,” the party headed by Berlusconi, concluded the European official.
Silvio Berlusconi, 86, had been admitted to the San Raffaele Hospital since Friday, supposedly for tests.
The leader of the Forza Italia party, media mogul and former AC Milan president was hospitalized for 45 days until three weeks ago, due to pneumonia and leukemia.
Italian media reported that Berlusconi died after his five children and brother Paolo were called to hospital, where they were joined by his partner, Marta Fascina.
Nicknamed “the immortal” for his longevity in politics, Berlusconi ruled Italy for nine years, three times between 1994 and 2011.
Berlusconi was a controversial figure, media mogul, conservative and right wing and Prime Minister of Italy for nine years (1994-1995, 2001-2006, 2008-2011).
He was the target of corruption allegations and was at the center of the sex scandals that would culminate in his expulsion from the Italian Senate in 2014.
In 2022, the billionaire returned to the political spotlight as a senator and leader of the party he founded, Força Italia, a member of the currently ruling right-wing and far-right coalition led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
