The funeral of Silvio Berlusconi, former Prime Minister of Italy who died on Monday at the age of 86, will take place at Milan Cathedral on June 14, according to the diocese of the Italian city.
The funeral time has not yet been released by the diocese.
It is expected to be a funeral with due honor, as Berlusconi served as Prime Minister of Italy three times, among other political positions he held.
Later on Monday, Berlusconi’s body will remain in the burning room at his villa in Villa Martino in Arcore, near Monza, north of Milan.
The next day, the burning room will move to the headquarters of the television network Mediaset, founded in 1978, according to the same sources.
The mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, offered the municipality facilities, near the cathedral, for the funeral.
Following his death Monday morning at Milan’s San Raffaele Hospital, some supporters gathered outside the medical center with messages and flags from Italy and Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party.
Other supporters have already started leaving flowers at the gates of his mansion.
In Rome, the city where he built his political career, the Italian flag flies at half-mast in the Senate, where he has sat since the last elections in October 2022.
Silvio Berlusconi, who died on June 12 at the age of 86, was a controversial figure, media mogul, conservative and Prime Minister of Italy for nine years (1994-1995, 2001-2006, 2008-2011).
He was the target of corruption allegations and was at the center of the sex scandals that would culminate in his expulsion from the Italian Senate in 2013.
In 2022, the billionaire returned to the political spotlight as a senator and leader of the party he founded, Forza Italia, a member of the right-wing and far-right coalition currently in power, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
