At least six people were killed and more than 20 wounded on Tuesday after a missile hit a residential area before dawn in Kryvyi Rih, Dnipropetrovsk region, the regional administration announced.
“Unfortunately, six people have already died. The rescue operation is ongoing,” the head of the Kryvyi Rih military administration, Oleksandr Vilkul, said on the Telegram social network, quoted by the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine announced that emergency teams rescued 12 people.
The attack took place before dawn (local time) when a missile hit a five-story building.
Initially, the balance pointed to three deaths and 25 wounded.
“A five-story building was destroyed. According to the first information, three of the residents were killed. Twenty-five people were injured, 19 of whom are hospitalized. There are still people under the rubble,” said the same source on the social network. Telegram messaging platform.
The industrial city of Kryvyi Rih, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zalenskey was born, had more than 612,000 inhabitants before the war started by Russia on February 24, 2022.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack on the social network Twitter and vowed to hold the perpetrators accountable.
“Russian murderers continue their war against residential buildings, cities and ordinary people. Unfortunately, there are dead and wounded. The rescue operation in Kryvyi Roh continues,” Zelensky said.
“Russian terrorists will never be forgiven and will be held accountable for every missile they launch,” he added.
The spokeswoman for the Southern Command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Nataliya Humenyuk, attributed the attack to the Russian objective of trying to destroy logistics centers supporting the counteroffensive launched by Kiev.
“Unfortunately, they are attacking residential buildings,” the spokeswoman was quoted as saying by Ukrinform.
In kyiv, the military authorities also reported this morning that “cruise missiles” had been fired.
“All enemy targets in the airspace around kyiv have been successfully detected and destroyed,” they said.
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov announced that drones had been launched “against civilian infrastructure”, hitting a company premises and a pavilion.
On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the Ukrainian army’s ongoing offensive in the south and east of the country was “proving difficult” but progress was being made, with at least seven locations having been recaptured by the russian forces.
