British police have cordoned off the city after what they described as a “terrible and tragic incident”.
A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. “A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after three people were killed in the town,” Nottinghamshire Police said in a statement, without disclosing the suspect’s identity.

Police were called to an area close to the city center at 4 a.m. local time (the same time in Lisbon), where two people were found dead in the street.
Officers were later called to another location, “where a van had attempted to run over three people,” who have been hospitalized, police said.
Later another person was found dead in another street.
The police chief said the investigation is still in its early stages and asked the public to understand the disturbances caused by the closure of six streets and the halting of some transport.
“We are asking the public to be patient as the investigation continues. At this time, several roads in the city will remain closed as the investigation progresses,” he added.
The statement came out after police closed several streets in the city center and tram service was halted.
The BBC and Sky News Television showed police footage, including special forces with machine guns.
Police and emergency services responded to a “serious incident”, British television reported when it was not yet known what had happened.
Nottingham is a city of about 350,000 inhabitants, located about 190 kilometers north of London.
