At least 14 EU countries have already sent aid after the collapse of the Ukraine dam

The European Commission announced on Tuesday that at least 14 Member States have already sent aid to Ukraine after the collapse of the Kakhovka dam, and reiterated that support for the country cannot wait for the end of the war.

In a debate, in the European Parliament, on the destruction of the Kakhovka dam, the vice-president of the European Commission, Valdis Dombrovkis, said that the 14 countries in question had already sent 76 boats, more than 300 water pumps and more than 160,000 items to house people affected by the floods.

Regarding aid to the country, invaded by Russia on February 24, 2022, Dombrovskis stressed that Brussels hopes that it will extend beyond this year, within the scope of the mid-term review of the 2024-2027 multiannual financial framework.

Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction cannot wait until the end of the war, the commissioner reiterated.

On June 6, the destruction of the Kakhovka dam on the Dnieper River caused flooding in neighboring municipalities and raised concerns about the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, located 150 kilometers upriver and occupied by the Russians.

Since the catastrophe, for which Kiev and Western partners blame Russia, the level of the dam has dropped “rapidly”, from 17 to 11.27 meters on Tuesday morning, according to data received by officials from the International Agency for Atomic Energy (AEIA).

The dam failure caused the displacement of nearly 9,000 people in southern Ukraine.

The military offensive launched on February 24, 2022 by Russia in Ukraine caused the worst refugee crisis in Europe since World War II (1939-1945).
