More than 100 people died in Nigeria on Tuesday after a boat carrying families returning from a wedding capsized in a river, according to local officials and police.
The boat was carrying passengers on a river in Nigeria’s Kwara state when the accident occurred, local police and the state governor’s office said.
Kwara police spokesman Okasanmi Ajayi told Agence France-Presse that 103 people died in the sinking and another 100 survived.
“Rescue operations are still ongoing, which means the numbers could increase,” he added.
The victims were back in the Patigi district of Kwara state after holding a wedding in Niger state, the Kwara state governor’s office said.
Shipwrecks on Nigerian rivers are common accidents, usually caused by overcrowded vessels, poor maintenance, and failure to follow safety regulations.
