US announces new military aid package to Ukraine of more than 300 million euros

The United States of America announced on Tuesday a new package of military aid to Ukraine, worth 325 million dollars (more than 300 million euros), within the framework of the progress made in recent days by the Ukrainian forces.

“According to a request of the President [dos Estados Unidos, Joe] Biden, I authorize shipment number 40 to Ukraine, which includes weapons and equipment worth $325 million,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement, quoted by the Europa Press agency.

This military aid package for Kiev included additional ammunition for Mississ Himars launch systems, ammunition for Nasams air defense systems, 155 and 105 mm artillery ammunition, as well as 15 Bradley fighting vehicles and 10 Strynker type armored vehicles, among others.

“The United States will continue to work with its allies and partners to provide Ukraine with the ability to meet its immediate battlefield needs and long-term security assistance requirements,” the note read.

Ukraine has avoided confirming the formal start of the expected counteroffensive, although allied countries, such as France, and political figures, such as NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, have already given it as a start. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the counteroffensive in southern and eastern Ukraine began on June 4.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky admitted on Monday that the counter-offensive is proving difficult, but making progress.

According to Zelensky, the operation made it possible to regain control of seven places that had been taken by Russian troops.

The counteroffensive was made possible by weaponry provided by Ukraine’s Western allies.

Information released by the two sides about the course of the war cannot be immediately independently verified.

Russia invaded Ukraine to “demilitarize and denazify” the neighboring country, according to the objectives announced by Putin on the day the operation began, February 24, 2022.

The conflict plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).

The number of civilian and military casualties is unknown, but several sources, including the UN, have admitted that it will be high.

Ukraine has relied on the support of Western allies, which supply kyiv with weapons to fight Russian troops.

The West has also imposed economic sanctions on Russia to try to lessen its ability to finance the war effort.

At the end of September, Putin decreed the annexation of the Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions to the territory of the Russian Federation, after having done the same with Crimea in 2014.

Ukraine and the international community in general do not recognize Russian sovereignty in the five annexed regions.

kyiv demanded the Russian withdrawal from Ukrainian territory as one of the preconditions for eventual peace talks, but Moscow responded that Ukrainians must accept the new reality.
