Trump denounces “abuse of power” after indictment over White House files

Former United States President Donald Trump denounced the formal accusation in a Miami federal court, calling it an “appalling abuse of power.”

Before supporters gathered at the New Jersey (northeast) businessman’s golf club on Tuesday, Trump accused his Democratic successor, Joe Biden, of being “corrupt” and attacking the “main political opponent.”

“This is electoral interference”said the Republican, who will become president in 2024.

Trump also promised, if he wins the election, to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Biden.

“I will appoint a serious special prosecutor to prosecute the most corrupt president in the history of the United States, Joe Biden, and the entire Biden crime family.”he said.

Trump criticized the special prosecutor in charge of the documents case, assuring that Jack Smith is committed to committing “political murders” and that the Justice Department’s decision to indict him was politically motivated.

The businessman argued that he had the authority to disclose sensitive material and confidential documents as he saw fit and claimed that former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush did so without being charged with any crime.

Hours earlier, the former US president pleaded “not guilty” in a Miami federal court to 37 federal charges related to embezzlement and concealment of classified documents.

The first former US head of state to be criminally charged by federal prosecutors, Trump appeared before federal judge Jonathan Goodman, who charged him with 37 charges filed by a grand jury, for diverting confidential documents to the Mar-a- Mansion. in southern Florida (southeast).

The 76-year-old Republican is accused of endangering the security of the United States by keeping confidential documents, including military plans or information about nuclear weapons, in places such as a bathroom or ballroom at his mansion.

Trump is also accused of refusing to return these documents, earning him charges of “illegally withholding information pertaining to national security,” as well as “obstruction of justice” and “false testimony.”

Trump’s lawyers, who spoke little throughout the hearing and folded their arms the entire time, asked that he be tried by a jury.

The full reading of the 37 charges was not made at the request of Trump’s defense, which said it already knew them.

The White House rejected Trump’s interference allegations and reiterated that the head of state, Joe Biden, is in no way involved in the former president’s legal process.

‘Justice is independent’White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said at a news conference.
