Belarus is reinforcing its arsenal. President Alexander Lukashenko has just announced the arrival of the first Russian tactical nuclear weapons in the country. Some warheads are more powerful than the bombs dropped by the United States during World War II.
“We have missiles and bombs that we received from Russia,” Alexander Lukashenko announced in an interview with Russia’s Rossiya-1 public television channel. A speech broadcast on the Telegram account of the Belarusian press agency Belta.
The bombs are three times more powerful than those (dropped on) Hiroshima and Nagasaki,” he added.
“Not too worrying”
Alexander Lukashenko and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin have agreed to deploy Russian short-range ground-based nuclear missiles on Belarusian soil, where they will remain under Russian command. Belarus was one of the rear bases of the Russian offensive in Ukraine launched in February 2022.
At the end of May, on the Franceinfo set, Guillaume Ancel, a former French army officer and defense specialist, estimated that the presence of these weapons in Belarus “is not very worrying” for neighboring countries.
For him, the threat status doesn’t really change because “all Russian weapons have enough range to be able to hit the targets they want, whether they’re from Russia or Belarus.”
