Two Japanese soldiers killed in gunfire

Two Japanese soldiers died and a third were injured in a shooting at an army training center in Gifu on Wednesday, the Japanese military said in a new assessment of the incident.

The new balance was pushed forward after authorities initially confirmed three people were injured in the incident.

The 18-year-old suspected shooter has already been arrested, local police reported to the France-Presse news agency.

Violent crimes are rare in Japan, but several attacks have shook the country in the past year, including the July 2022 shooting of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during an election campaign.

In April, the current prime minister, Fumio Kishida, was the target of an explosive device, also during a campaign campaign, from which he escaped unscathed.

Following these incidents, security was tightened and several thousand agents were deployed when Japan hosted the G7 group summit in Hiroshima last month.

In May, police arrested a man accused of killing four people in a knife and gun attack in Nagano, west of Tokyo.
