Nearly 22% of the EU population was at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2022

In 2022, a total of 95.3 million people were at risk of poverty or social exclusion in the European Union, representing 21.6% of the bloc’s population, with Portugal recording a rate of 20.1%, Eurostat made announced Wednesday.

According to data from the European Statistical Service, the percentage of the population at risk of poverty or social exclusion in the EU has remained almost unchanged between 2021 and 2022, i.e. those living in households where there is at least one of the three risks of poverty and social exclusion: at risk of poverty, severe material or social deprivation and/or being part of a household with very low work intensity.

Among Member States, the highest risk rates of poverty or social exclusion were recorded last year in Romania (34%), Bulgaria (32%), Greece and Spain (26% each) and the lowest in the Czech Republic (12%), Slovenia (13% ) and Poland (16%).

Portugal presented a rate of 20.1%, down from the 22.4% in 2021 and in line with the 20% in 2020, occupying 12th place in the table of Member States.
