Pope Francis will leave the hospital “in the next few days”

Pope Francis will be discharged “in the coming days,” the Vatican announced Wednesday. The head of the Catholic Church is recovering at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where he underwent surgery on his abdomen a week ago.

“The Holy Father rested well during the night. The medical team informs that the clinical evolution is proceeding regularly, without complications, for which reason he is expected to be discharged in the coming days,” announced the director of the Holy See’s press service, Matteo Bruni, in statements quoted by the news agency. AFP.

This morning, the Pope “dedicated himself to work”, after having said a prayer and received the Eucharist.

On June 7, the Pope underwent three-hour abdominal surgery under general anesthesia, which was uneventful.

Francisco was hospitalized with bronchitis for a few days in March at the Gemelli Hospital.

Francis’ health has been the subject of debate since he made it clear he would be willing to resign if illness prevented him from doing his job, as his predecessor Benedict XVI did in 2013.

The Pope has been affected by cataracts, sciatica and osteoarthritis in his right knee that have forced him to use a wheelchair on numerous occasions.

After the colon operation on July 4, 2021, he reacted to speculation: “I’m still alive, some prelates wanted me to die, they were already preparing the conclave (to choose a successor).”
