The end of a myth. While we thought the “automatic box” permit was easier to obtain, ultimately there are more flaws than with the classic permit. This is indicated by the latest balance of the most approved exam in France published by Road Safety and consulted by Automatic More.
14% of the candidates opt for the automatic license
This is the first time that the distinction between both permits appears in official statistics, highlights the specialized magazine. So far, it is impossible to know the success rate of the two categories.
First interesting figure: the number of candidates. Of nearly 1.6 million license applicants last year, 219,789 opted for this “automatic clutch gearbox” (BEA) licence, or 13.9% of the total. With strong variations depending on the region: “from 9.3% in Hauts-de-France to 24.6% in Ile-de-France” and to 32.3% in Paris, a national record by department.
A permit for “students in difficulty”
On the success rate side: it was 48.2% for the automatic license, compared to 56.8% for all applicants for the B license. Also confirmed, the effectiveness of early learning to drive: 74 .7% who followed this formula obtained their license in 2022.
But why such simpler a priori permissionlessness? Specifically with the absence of gear changes and therefore fewer associated operations, stepping on the clutch pedal and manipulating the lever.
Answer: a license often favored by “students who already have difficulty driving,” explains Patrick Crespo, president of the CER network, to the magazine.
Second explanation: a permit that is more successful in large cities. A high-traffic environment where the risk of “cheating” on test day would be higher.
