Two years after the October 7 attack, Benjamin Netanyahu promises Israelis “the return of all hostages”

In a statement released on Tuesday, October 7, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made his fellow citizens “a promise that Gaza is no longer a threat to Israel.”

This Tuesday, October 7, the day that marks the second anniversary of the bloody Hamas attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised his compatriots the achievement of all the objectives of the war against the Islamist movement in Gaza, starting with bringing “all the hostages.”

“Citizens of Israel, we are in decisive days,” Benjamin Netanyahu wrote in a press release posted on social media. “We will continue to achieve all the objectives of the war: the return of all hostages, the destruction of the power of Hamas and the promise that Gaza is no longer a threat to Israel.”

While indirect negotiations between the Israeli government and Hamas have been held since Monday in Egypt to try to end the Gaza War, Benjamin Netanyahu’s mention of “The destruction of the power of Hamas” appears to mark a turning point compared to his recent speeches in which he stated the destruction of the Palestinian Islamist movement as a goal.

Trump saw a ‘real opportunity’ for a deal

This Tuesday, Donald Trump spoke of a “real opportunity” to reach an agreement aimed at ending the war. The American president, putting pressure on a deal, said an American “team” was involved in indirect talks in progress, in the el-Sheikh charm between Israeli negotiators and Hamas.

These discussions are based on a plan announced on September 29 by the US president, which provides for a ceasefire, the release of hostages eliminated during the October 7 attack in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, the passage of the Israeli army from Gaza and the disarmament of Hamas.

“There is a real possibility that we can do something” about a Gaza deal, Donald Trump said. “We want the hostages to be released immediately.”

According to Egyptian diplomacy Badr Abdelatty, a delegation led by Steve Witkoff, Donald Trump’s emissary, will arrive in Egypt on Wednesday. In a sign of intense efforts to achieve results, Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed Ben Abdelrahmane al-Thani and Turkish Intelligence Chief Ibrahim Kalin will also join the talks on Wednesday.

Hamas previously said it tried to overcome “all obstacles” that were likely to prevent a deal. In its response to the Trump Plan, the Islamist movement agreed to release the hostages, but called for an end to the Israeli offensive and a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. He did not mention its disarmament, the key point of the proposal.
