The “social rent” in the final stretch? Emmanuel Macron’s campaign promise in 2022, this device that would allow households that really do not have the means to change cars to switch to electric cars for a rent limited to 100 euros per month, would be in the process of being finalized. The President of the Republic was thus able to confirm its implementation during the traditional interview on July 14, says an article in echoes.
What interested population?
Behind the scenes, we would prepare the last details, with a measure that would target households up to the 5th decile, that is, a fiscal reference annual unit income of less than 14,089 euros. The same category that can now benefit from the ecological bonus increased from 5,000 to 7,000 euros.
At the beginning of June, Agnès Pannier-Runacher had estimated that two categories were “indisputable” to benefit from it:
“Those for whom the vehicle is a work tool, I am thinking of liberal nurses for example, (…) and those who cannot afford to switch to a clean vehicle because today it is too expensive on the market”, said the Minister for the Energy Transition at that time.
In the idea, these households, which would represent approximately “100,000 people”, will be able to order their vehicle in the fall.
What eligible models?
At the ministry, meetings are still to be held with the various players in the sector in question: the car manufacturers, of course, but also the long-term rental companies, which will take care of the financing, and the dealers, to guarantee deliveries. to the clients. .
Problem: Currently few models would really be eligible, in a context where electric cars continue to be more expensive than their thermal equivalents.
Unless you offer long-term Chinese car rentals: with MG which, for example, has just launched an offer… at 99 euros per month. Offer aimed precisely at people eligible for the increased bonus and the conversion bonus. A very aggressive rental and that the State would not even have to compensate so that the end customer can benefit from a vehicle for less than 100 euros per month.
But when the bonus must help support cars produced in EuropeStarting next year, it’s hard to imagine that the future “social rental” will be based on models assembled outside the continent.
The state would then trust the future ë-C3Citroën’s electric car for less than 25,000 euros to be launched in early 2024, but with a Chinese battery. The Renault R5 and Volkswagen ID.2which also point to this starting price, but with “made in Europe” batteries, are scheduled for the end of next year and the beginning of 2025 respectively.
