Accelerated daily carpooling with the bonus

According to government figures, 130,000 new drivers have taken trips through carpooling platforms since the beginning of the year.

Daily carpooling has accelerated with the bonus of 100 euros announced at the end of 2022, according to figures published this Thursday by the Government, but much remains to be done to generalize this practice. As of July 1, 2023, 130,000 new drivers had taken rides on the platforms.

Thus, the number of trips doubled in the first six months of the year, compared to the beginning of 2022: the platforms registered more than 5 million trips, for an estimated saving of 7.7 million liters of oil. Popular trips take place in Ile-de-France and around Rouen in particular, but also between Annecy and Switzerland, or between Nice and Monaco, according to the Carpooling Observatory. While long-distance car sharing has developed strongly, day-to-day car sharing is still a drop in the ocean of transportation.

The platforms record less than 30,000 daily trips on average (declared, because many trips are also informal), for 100 million trips that are made by car every day in France, to go to or from work, take the children to school or go shopping.

“It is very encouraging”, it is a “very good way to save fuel”, greeted the Minister of Energy Transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, Thursday morning on France 2, before a follow-up meeting on the device.

Goal: 900,000 trips per day

The ministries of Ecological Transition, Energy Transition and Transport announced in December that motorists who start sharing a car in 2023 could benefit from a bonus of 100 euros, as part of a plan of 150 million euros in total.

The Government has launched a “fight plan” against fraud in this voucher, with a reinforcement of the identification of carpoolers or campaigns to ban fraudsters from the platforms. “These actions will be further strengthened in the coming months,” the three ministries said on Thursday.

A “letter” for companies in favor of car sharing is also launched on Thursday, already signed by La Poste, Carrefour or Les Mousquetaires. The very ambitious goal of this “car sharing scheme” is to reach 900,000 short-distance trips every day, then three million in a few years.
