A total of 305 people died on the roads of France in July 2023, a drop of 10% compared to the same month of the previous year, Road Safety announced this Friday.
This decline in road deaths in July comes after falls of 5% in June, 19% in May and 13% in April.
High toll for pedestrians and cyclists
According to provisional estimates from the National Interministerial Road Safety Observatory (ONISR), among the deceased are 136 motorists and 84 users of two-wheeled motorized vehicles.
“The accident rate for the month of July, generally downward, should not hide a high price for soft mobility users”, including 22 pedestrians and 25 cyclists,” notes Florence Guillaume, inter-ministerial delegate for road safety. , quoted in a press release from the ONISR.
With 10 deaths among users of motorized personal transport devices, such as scooters, “the month of July holds the sad record for the highest number of victims in this category,” it continues. And remember the “necessary” respect for traffic regulations and “vigilance” and the usefulness of wearing a helmet, “highly recommended”.
Decrease in the number of seriously injured
The observatory also records 1,558 seriously injured on the roads of France, a 7% drop compared to July 2022, a balance also below that registered in 2019, the year before the pandemic.
In the overseas territories, the balance also decreases in terms of mortality on the roads (17 deaths, a decrease of 29% compared to July 2022). On the other hand, the number of injured is increasing (359, +10%).
