At Volkswagen, vegetarians have lost the battle against currywurst

Superseded by a vegetarian alternative, currywurst is making a comeback in a canteen at Volkswagen’s German headquarters in Wolfsburg.

It was a decision that provoked a lot of reactions: in 2021, Volkswagen replaced its traditional “currywurst” with a vegetarian alternative in one of the many canteens at its headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany.

Class struggle, sausage version

A canteen that has the particularity of mixing different profiles of employees: the decision to become 100% vegetarian “would have been taken mainly in the direction of managers, rather than ‘the base'”, says an article in the newspaper echoes.

A currywurst billed as “the workers’ energy bar” by former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, who reacted to the excitement this decision generated across the Rhine.

Go back this summer: since August 7, this dining room is once again offering fish or meat dishes, including the mythical and original currywurst.

A political issue in Germany

The “land of sausage” has the particularity of also being an important stronghold of vegetarians, 10% of the population, recalls the echoesand meat consumption, which has fallen by 15% in the last 10 years.

Faced with an environmental party associated with this adoption of a meat-free diet, the German extreme right recovered from this decision by Volkswagen with the slogan “With us, citizens decide for themselves what they eat.”

This will be the case of the regulars of this canteen, knowing that Volkswagen continues to maintain its offer of “false sausages”.
