Carmaker Honda presented new targets for two-wheeled vehicles on Wednesday, notably increasing the number of electric motorcycles and scooters it plans to sell per year from 2030 to 4 million, up from 3.5 million previously. The Japanese group plans to market 30 new models of electric two-wheeled vehicles by 2030, while reducing the production costs of these machines by 50% during the same period, according to a press release.
Honda is already investing 100 billion yen during the period 2021-2025 in this segment, and plans an additional investment of 400 billion yen (almost 2.5 billion euros at the current exchange rate) in the period 2026- 2030.
To reduce costs and achieve its sales objectives for electric two-wheeled vehicles, Honda intends to adopt the principle of “plug-in” models (rechargeable from the electrical grid), optimize batteries or even increase the efficiency of its supplies, he clarified.
A dedicated factory from 2027
It also plans to establish factories dedicated to the manufacture of electric two-wheeled vehicles around the world, starting in 2027, and to simplify their production by basing the different models on “common modules”, which should allow it, in particular, to reduce the length. of production lines compared to conventional lines.
Since 2021, Honda has also set the ambitious goal of being 100% electric in its automobile segment by 2040, and has planned colossal investments to achieve it.
However, at the end of October, the Japanese group and its American partner General Motors gave up joint production of “affordable” electric vehicles whose commercialization was to begin in 2027, a joint project announced last year.
