Road users will no longer lose license points for speeding less than 5 km/hour from January 1, 2024, according to a government decree published on Friday in the Journalofficiel.
“Small” speeding, less than five km/h, currently punishable by a reduction of one point on the driving license and a fixed fine ranging between 68 and 135 euros, from January will only be punished per infringement.
The reduction of one point on the license will only be applied for speeding between 5 km/h and 20 km/h.
More than one in two violations for speeding below 5 km/h
This “common sense” measure was announced in April by Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin. On the contrary, the League Against Road Violence called it “nonsense.”
In 2020, of the 12.5 million fines sent for speeding controlled by radars, 58% referred to speeds below 5 km/h, according to the Ministry of the Interior.
A total of 3,267 people died on the roads of mainland France in 2022, according to a consolidated Road Safety report, a stable level (+0.7%) compared to 2019, the last reference year before the pandemic.
