An obligatory gesture that is very little respected. More than 90% of children do not wear seat belts on school buses. Although coach accidents are very rare (0.2% of road accidents), being restrained can prevent terrible consequences for passengers.
In Remoulins (Gard), high school students participated in a bus accident simulation experience organized by the company Keolis in collaboration with public agents in the sector. Installed on a machine carrier, the vehicle can tilt 90 degrees in less than fifteen seconds thanks to a turning system. The objective: to highlight the importance of wearing a seat belt.
“Wearing a seat belt is vital”
“I was afraid,” testifies one of the schoolgirls, “I remembered that you always have to wear your seat belt.” Jean-Yves Durand, sector director of Keolis, points out that the number of students who adhere tends to increase after participating in this prevention action.
“They are not aware of the danger. Therefore, subjecting them to a simulated accident shows them that wearing a seat belt is vital and essential,” emphasizes Christophe Conil, director of a secondary school in Remoulins, where more than 90% of students wear seatbelt. In total, in 2023, 1,500 students from Gard and Hérault were affected by this awareness-raising exercise.
