The car sharing voucher will be renewed in 2024, but only for short journeys

This bonus of 100 euros will be used for daily travel in 2024, announced the Ministry of Ecological Transition.

The bonus of 100 euros for motorists who start car sharing will be renewed in 2024 but only for short journeys, AFP learned this Wednesday from the Ministry of Ecological Transition. Launched at the beginning of 2023, within the framework of a 150 million euro plan to promote this still very minority practice, the 2024 bonus will aim to increase trips to work and leisure.

The Government must take stock this week of this measure launched at the beginning of 2023, within the framework of a 150 million euro plan. “In 2024, the Green Fund’s vehicle sharing measure is renewed to continue supporting new projects in favor of vehicle sharing throughout the territory,” Ecological Transition Minister Christophe Béchu told AFP.

The ministry also confirmed the end of the long-distance bonus and will reserve it for “daily trips.” Until recently, car sharing accounted for 3% of long-distance trips. But its daily practice is still a drop in the ocean in transportation (0.01% according to the Blablacar platform).

How does the government plan to develop car sharing?

Target 3 million daily trips

The platforms record an average of a few tens of thousands of daily trips (declared, because many trips are also informal), for 100 million daily car trips in France. In a dozen French metropolises, more than eight out of ten drivers drive alone in their car between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., according to a study by road director Vinci.

The very ambitious goal of the “ride-sharing plan” is to ultimately reach three million daily trips, which would allow France to avoid 1% of its greenhouse gas emissions.

“Five years ago, this public policy simply did not exist,” recalled Christophe Béchu.

The Green Fund, which makes up this car-sharing plan, has made it possible to offer 300 communities “financial support that allows the pioneer territories to reinforce their action in this area or even for some of them to fully assume this issue.”

“The potential of this lever is still far from being fully exploited,” the Minister stressed. “This solution is very relevant to respond to mobility challenges, particularly in peri-urban areas or in rural areas where density does not always allow the deployment of public transport.”
