Emmanuel Macron’s promise of “social leasing” to purchase an electric vehicle for 100 euros per month is taking shape. In fact, the conditions of the system were clarified on Wednesday.
Who will be eligible?
The system is reserved for the poorest 50% of households with a reference income of 15,400 euros per unit per year at most. There are between 4 and 5 million people. It will be dedicated to active heavy drivers (more than 8,000 kilometers per year) or those who live more than 15 kilometers from their workplace.
A website to check eligibility and place an order will go online this Friday, starting January 1. The vehicles will be delivered starting next January. In 2024, between 20 and 25,000 cars will have benefited from this social leasing system, according to Government forecasts. And 50,000 in 2025.
What vehicles will be available?
A regulatory text will be published on Friday with the list of vehicles that will be eligible for the new ecological bonus. As of this publication, only these cars will be eligible for this bonus and, therefore, for social leasing.
According to Reuters, which cites sources close to the matter, 65% of electric cars sold in France could benefit from the new state bonus. The issue is delicate because, according to figures from the automobile platform (PFA), three of the best-selling electric models in France since the beginning of the year: the Tesla model Y AND Model 3 and the Dacia Primavera very affordable– are mainly made in China and could lose the bonus.
How much will it cost?
Therefore, the beneficiaries must pay a rent of 100 euros per month. The Government plans to double the bonus, which will avoid paying a large first rental for the purchase of the vehicle as occurs with leasing. Therefore, the first rent will be 100 euros, there will be no initial effort for the affected households.
But there will be smaller electric models that will be offered for a rental of less than 100 euros per month, or 90 euros, and larger sedan-type models that will be offered for a rental of more than 100 euros. Insurance will not be included in the rent.
