Electric car at 100 euros per month: maybe, but not everything included

If the offer of an electric car at 100 euros (or less) per month is attractive, other expenses must be taken into account to estimate the total budget, such as insurance or installation of the plug.

An electric car at 100 euros per month but excluding options, excluding insurance, excluding the cost of installing the charging station. If the government has just introduced its social leasing system, to evaluate the total monthly cost of your electric car you have to take into account other expenses in addition to the rent. Which can be much superior.

What happens to the options chosen when ordering the vehicle?

“Any option or service added to the purchase price of the vehicle and not provided for within the leasing system will be reflected in the monthly rental payments,” specifies the government website dedicated to leasing.

This suggests that certain vehicle options, added at the time of ordering, will increase the rent set under social leasing. With the publication of the decrees this Friday, the manufacturers only detail their offers, but it is a first point to take into account. Peugeot explains to us, for example, that its offers are based on the first finish. “If the client wishes, he can add options, but they will be his responsibility and will be additional to the initial rental,” the manufacturer tells us.

Insurance, a mandatory expense that can make the bill more expensive

Second item to add to the 100 euros of rent: insurance. As with any motor vehicle, insurance is required but is not included in the lease offer. However, it can easily double your monthly car budget.

According to Le Parisien, which is based on calculations from the comparator Assurland, for a Renault Twingo E-Tech, the cost of comprehensive insurance can vary from 27.33 euros per month for a driver with a bonus of 50 to 111 euros for a driver with a bonus of 50 to 111 euros. a young driver without a bonus. In the latter case, the insurance amount represents almost triple the minimum rental of the Twingo, announced from 40 euros per month.

The comparator Lesfurets.com, however, recalled in mid-November that the cost of insurance was lower for an electric car “12% cheaper, on average.”, than traditional car insurance“, said Cédric Ménager, general director of the comparator. This is due to the discounts that insurers usually grant to these greener vehicles and the lower repair costs.

Who will pay for the charging station at home?

Third cost element to take into account: the plug to recharge the vehicle at home. To recharge, it is necessary to install at least a reinforced outlet and, even better, a charging station. According to the EDF website, the installation of a reinforced socket (3.7 kWh power) costs between 700 and 1,000 euros and between 500 and 2,500 euros for a 7.4 kWh terminal.

Who will cover the cost of this installation? “In certain cases, the price may be included in the rental company’s offer,” the government says. Manufacturers and rental companies, at the time of writing, have not yet detailed potential support for the terminals.

For its Twingo, Renault mentions six months of free charging, but without detailing the conditions. Stellantis also indicates that it offers charging stations without providing financing details. Citroën, whose electric C3 is offered at 54 euros per month, confirms to us, for example, that it does not accept a plug.

However, there are installation aids available to install them. The official leasing website notes that there is a tax credit available for installing a controllable charging station at home. Allow a maximum of 300 euros per collection system, specifies the Imposs.gouv.fr website.

“The tax credit for the installation of a controllable charging station at home will increase and reach 500 euros from January 1, 2024,” the government specified on the leasing website.

Maintenance also needs to be taken into account, as with any vehicle. Some manufacturers, such as Renault with the Twingo, include it in the 40 euro rental. Stellantis does not mention this in its offers.
