Other electronic device. After touch screen tablets, connected watches, headphones, scooters and, above all, smartphones, Xiaomi presented its first electric car this Thursday. The SU7 is a sedan almost 5 meters long that is reminiscent of the Porsche Taycan or the Tesla Model S in its coupe lines.
Two potential rivals when we talk about the benefits of this new model. The SU7 has a range of 600 to 800 kilometers for its Max version, that is, 200 kilometers more than the Model S. The SU7 batteries are supplied by the Chinese manufacturer BYD, also a major electrical manufacturer, and its compatriot CATL.
In terms of sportiness, Xiaomi announces 0 to 100 in just 2.78 seconds (always for the Max version), the equivalent of the fastest Taycan. The Tesla Model S Plaid is still faster, at 2.1 seconds. Xiaomi fits well in the wake of these two references to electric cars: the name SU stands for “Speed Ultra”, explains Numerama.
Of course, Xiaomi has developed the software and the electronic part of the vehicle. A sample of the electronic know-how of the Chinix group, the SU7 includes in particular a Lidar and two large screens on the rear, as we can read on the specialized site Caradisiac.
Becoming a leader in electric cars
These figures, like the presentation ceremony, reflect in any case Xiaomi’s ambitions.
“The goal is to become one of the top five manufacturers in the world at the cost of 15 to 20 years of hard efforts,” explained the group’s head, Lei Jun, “offering a car comparable to Porsche and Tesla.”
It was in front of a packed room in Beijing that he presented the SU7.
Xiaomi plans to market this model in 2025, according to AFP. The price of this vehicle has not been specified. At the moment no details have been given about possible marketing in Europe.
