Sales of two-wheeled vehicles fell 2% in 2023 in France compared to 2022, in a market where electric vehicle registrations fell sharply, according to figures published on Tuesday by the company AAA Data.
The decline in sales affects both new vehicles with 284,457 units sold (-2%) and used vehicles (-2%, 886,425 units sold).
“This slowdown can be explained by a context of inflation and an effect of concentration of household spending on essential products, reducing purchases of pleasure or convenience,” according to a statement from the observatory commissioned by the insurance company Solly Azar.
Sales of electric two-wheelers contracted by 16% with only 42,624 registrations in 2023. However, they had progressed in 2022 and during the first six months of 2023.
“The two-wheeled vehicle market is lagging behind in terms of electrification compared to the automobile market,” insists the company AAA Data, which explains this slowdown by “the low supply of two-wheeled vehicles and the less marked support of the part of public authorities”. in relation to the automobile.
Sales of electric two-wheeled vehicles are concentrated mainly in large cities, particularly in Paris, where free parking for this type of vehicle could explain the trend, according to the observatory’s conclusions.
-16% on electricity
Only the motorcycle market recorded a slight increase (+2%) with 864,306 sales in 2023. New vehicles grew even more (+6%) “with a clear increase in purchases by “new bikers” among 18 and 25 years (+30%)
Another observation: “leisure vehicles, powered by CSP+ (…) and the large displacement segment (+400 cc)”, have boosted the sector.
“According to the observatory, the two-wheeled market, in all categories together, is largely driven by young people: +38% among young people aged 14 to 17 and +6% among those aged 18 to 25” , writes the company AAA Data in its press release.
Territorially, the fall in purchases of two-wheeled vehicles is more marked in large cities, and in particular in Paris, where it is strongest (-15%), followed by Seine-Saint-Denis (-11%) and Altos of the Seine (-11%). -9%).
“The drop in these three departments is largely explained by the entry into force of paid parking” for two-wheeled vehicles with internal combustion engines, according to the press release.
Starting in April 2024, after long delays by public authorities, mandatory technical inspection of motorized two-wheeled vehicles should come into force, which “could significantly transform the market,” according to AAA Data.
