What electric cars are produced in France?

While Stellantis has just announced that six new electric cars will soon be produced in France, a look back at the current production of zero-emission models in France.

The electric car is clearly the main protagonist of this Mondial de l’Auto 2022, which is being held until Sunday, October 23 at the Porte de Versailles, in Paris. Many models on the stands of the manufacturers present, but also many releases to come. At Renault, three concepts, for example the future R5, 4L and Scenic Vision, foreshadow production models to be launched from 2024 and assembled in the north of France.

On the Stellantis side (group resulting from the merger between PSA and FCA), we also announced 6 new electric models “made in France” for the coming years.

Towards the 2 million electric cars produced in France per year?

Ultimately, the goal is to produce 2 million electric cars in France, Bruno Le Maire recalled this morning at the Automotive Summit, which was held on the sidelines of the Mondial de l’Auto and the Equip Auto fair.

To specify it, it is the equivalent of the number of vehicles (including light commercial vehicles) all engines combined, registered in 2009. Another fact to take into account, with the production of automobiles that has been growing in recent years, millions of units: this is the average during the period 2004-2020.

Where are the electric cars sold in Europe made?

But where are the 100% electric vehicles currently produced by the two French groups, Renault and Stellantis since the beginning of the year? Thanks to the data provided by the firm Inovev, you can easily find out in the following interactive infographic. We have also included plug-in hybrid models (PHEV), which can circulate in 100% electric mode, but with limited autonomy.

Champion of electric sales in Europe from January to August with 41,782 units, the Fiat 500 is produced, for example, in Italy, in Turin. In second position, the Peugeot e-208 (28,777 units), assembled in Slovakia, ahead of the Renault Zoé, produced in Flins (Yvelines) and the first “made in France” model in the ranking.

Fourth, a certain Dacia Spring, the most affordable electric car of the moment, is assembled in China. The Renault group brand has sold 22,145 units since the beginning of the year according to Inovev.

France, electric bastion of Stellantis and Renault

If we make the ranking by country, always on the electric vehicles sold by Stellantis and Renault in Europe, France is neck and neck with Spain, with some 53,000 units produced in January and August.

In third position we find Italy with the Fiat 500, just ahead of China with the Dacia Spring.

Surprise of this classification, the first economy in Europe and the first car manufacturer does not produce any electric car of the two French groups. The Opel Astra, cousin of the Peugeot 308, is not yet offered in a 100% electric version, like the DS4. As a reminder, the country can still count on its domestic automakers, Volkswagen, Mercedes and BMW, and Tesla, which recently started production at its factory near Berlin.
