You may have seen this video “doing the rounds” on social media? You can see large 4x4s performing tricks on the Strip, the main avenue of Las Vegas. A city where the world’s largest consumer electronics fair, CES, took place last week.
It was within the framework of this event that Mercedes took a look at its future G-Class converted to electric. For the occasion this demonstration of a new function that is surprising to say the least.
If we can expect to be able to turn on the spot on board the future G-Class, the question naturally arises: why?
From “G-Turn” after “Bounce Mode”
In fact, Mercedes has remained quite mysterious about this “teaser” of this future model and the meaning of this operation. a video and some photosshared on X (formerly Twitter), it briefly returns to this operation and the sequence otherwise only appears at the end. from a video summarizing the innovations presented at CES.
This is actually a new feature called “G-Turn”, as stated in the text of the tweet above, with the following mention:
“The G-Turn function should not be used on public roads. This stunt was performed by professional drivers on a closed road with the support of local police and special road preparation.”
In fact, we can assume that the ground is very humid, to facilitate these rotations on the bitumen. The goal of the G-Turn would be to get the future electric G-Class out of a complex off-road driving situation.
Also a way for Mercedes to demonstrate that all four wheels would be equipped with an independent motor: to be confirmed, but since the wheels do not seem to turn even at a minimum angle, it would only be the action of the right front wheel. in motion, in front, and that of the right rear wheel, in reverse, which would allow the G-Class to skid.
Let’s see if this “G-Turn” will not deviate with the release of the future electric G-Class, as happened recently with “Bounce mode”. A function also intended to circulate off the beaten path, to leave the sand alone, but which also allowed some to be smart in the city.
