In the factories of car manufacturers, the electric transition will require the conversion of current trades. While the President of the Republic recalled the objective of one million electric cars produced in France in 2027, and two million in 2030, the sector must transform its industrial tool into a compulsory market. Today’s workers are working on technologies that will no longer exist (or at least many in Europe) tomorrow, such as heat engines.
“As far as France is concerned, I think we have prepared this transition well. We have been working on it for two years,” Renault CEO Luca de Meo told BFM Business.
“Absolutely no problem”
The manager, referring to “decisions” made by the manufacturer such as the creation of a large pole dedicated to electric cars in Hauts-de-France, assured that there will be “absolutely no problem” in the “French perimeter”. In particular, he cited the conversion of the Cléon plant in Normandy, which has been manufacturing thermal engines since the 1950s and will gradually switch to electric motors, in particular through a partnership with the equipment manufacturer Valeo.
“We are well placed to prevent social damage” in France, he said.
Also outside, “where all the combustion activity will be”, adds Luca de Meo. “We must not forget that, in the best and most optimistic forecasts, electricity [fera] 40% of the total, which means that 60% will be thermal”.
